High Integrity Castings for Safety Critical Applications
Squeeze casting is a modified version of high pressure die casting. The pressure is high, yet the shot speed is considerably lower to minimize turbulent flow. Squeeze casting produces high integrity castings for safety critical applications. Because of the available control and high pressure, squeeze casting is the preferred method to infiltrate a ceramic sponge, or preform, in the process of manufacturing metal matrix composites (MMC’s).
REL Inc has the ability to squeeze cast aluminum and magnesium, and to manufacture composites (MMC’s). REL has both vertical and horizontal squeeze casting machines. The vertical machine, which was designed and built by REL, has 1500 tons of clamp force, 1200 tons of injection / squeeze force, and is capable of casting a part that is 3 feet x 3 feet, or 1,296 in2 (0.84m2). The maximum thickness is 5 inches (12.7 cm).
