Advanced MaterialsThrough advanced material science theory tempered by practical manufacturing expertise, REL provides your team with increased product performance and weight reduction. REL has developed a method to tailor material properties from point to point reducing weight and cost. In other words they can make a part strong in some areas, wear resistant in other areas and stiff in other areas, all in a single light-weight, optimized, cost-effective, multi-functional part. Their SEM laboratory provides immediate visibility of process changes. REL often achieves 24-hour process design updates in the prototype phase of a project. Prototype material development at REL is carried out by a highly educated and professional staff. REL advanced material research focuses on advanced lightweight composite materials including metal matrix composites, ceramics, and metallic foams for tailored material performance. These performance metrics include selective stiffening, selective strengthening, and machining characteristics. In REL's Advanced Materials Research Lab, material development is performed in situ with manufacturing process parameters, in order to assist in the secondary machining of the advanced commercial components. The REL Lab also has a modern machine shop to assist in the assessment of current machining technology, as well as advanced tailored machining processes for the developed materials.
