REL’s in house ceramic center is ideal for REL, Inc.’s innovative engineering. It allows for small test batching, as well as a speedy turn around to tweak a preform formula. REL can change preform material, volume fraction, preform thickness, binder types, and shapes of performs. All in all these choices keep inventive rates down for REL.

Ceramics at REL begins in a tri-mixing bowl. There are three mixing bowls which allow for production size batching. For assurance that the preforms won’t be blasted in the kiln, they go through an oven dryer that transports them to the kiln station. The bone dry greenware is checked for imperfections and placed on kiln trays. The trays are transported into the kiln by a cart, which minimizes stress on the forms. Once fired, preforms are ready to be cast into metal matrix composites (mmcs), or be carefully packaged and shipped.
